What is running pace?

Pace is the time it takes to cover a set distance, usually shown as minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mi). It’s a common way to track performance in running and walking because it’s easy to compare across different routes and workouts.

Pace vs speed explained

Speed measures how much distance you cover per unit of time (like km/h or mph). Pace is the inverse: how much time it takes to cover a unit of distance. This calculator shows both so you can use whichever format you prefer.

How to calculate race finish time

If you know your pace (for example 5:00 min/km) and your distance (for example 10 km), the finish time is pace × distance. Splits assume you maintain the same pace throughout the entire run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about pace, speed, and time.

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide your total time by your distance. The calculator shows pace as min/km and min/mi.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time per distance (min/km). Speed is distance per time (km/h).

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply seconds per kilometer by 1.609344 to get seconds per mile (the calculator does this automatically).

What pace do I need for a 5K or marathon?

Choose a race preset, enter your target finish time, and the calculator will show the pace you need.

Is this pace calculator accurate?

It’s accurate for constant-pace estimates, but real races vary due to terrain, weather, and fatigue.
